>Bad Week

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

>It's been tough a couple days. First, the blower goes out on our gas furnace. On Tuesday night we smelled a horrible burning odor coming through the registers. I ended up calling the fire department to check it out. Nothing was on fire.

When I woke up in the morning, it was 63 degrees inside the house. The blower stopped working. Then, on the way to taking the kids to school, Carries crashes the car. No one was hurt. But some guy's poor Vanagon was gone. Our car sustained $4000 in damage.

Tonight, all is well, We're just a little poorer. We have a rental car, the heat is on, and I just want to watch a little television.

As I like to say, "It coulda been worse." (I love that saying because it's both optimistic and pessimistic at the same time).

Today I took Cole to the Oregon vs. Oregon State wrestling match at Mac Court. I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've ever paid to enter an event at the U of O.

It was well worth the four bucks when the OSU scored a takedown with 17 seconds remaining in the final match of the day to squeak out the victory.

Here's a pic as Jamie Rakevich celebrates his victory over over Cody Parker.

They are waiting for a boat to pick them up and go on an all day wildlife tour up the Belize River. The problem is, it was in 2001. Has it been that long? I need another freelance assignment to Central America.

This is a Quicktime movie of the full Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers picture story. Their song "I got a funny little feeling" plays as the photos progress. It lasts 2:48. Be sure and set your volume before clicking the link, it just starts playing. Half volume with headphones is perfect on my computer. If you're on dial-up don't bother. It's 5.1 megs.

I was going through family pix and found this shot of Cole and Greta on television. There is a really cool exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) where kids can stand in front of the blue screen and pretend they are a meteorologist on television. They had a lot of fun with it.

The fog rolled in really fast yesterday. I decided to go to a spot I've been thinking about for a long time. A spot I found on my dirt-bike last summer. It's a place in the Coburg Hills that you get to by going up McGowan Creek Road in Springfield.

It was a 10 minute hike from the road. The problem is I stayed until after sunset. Getting back to my car took 20 minutes. It was so dark by then I couldn't see the trail. At first, I thought I passed it. I back-tracked. Turns out I didn't pass it...I didn't go far enough.

I have to admit, walking around in the woods at night is a bit scary.

>Happy Birthday to Me!

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

>Today is my birthday. I'm 39-years-old. Carrie bought a sweater and t-shirt at The Gap, made me a steak dinner and bought some fancy German chocolate cake. The kids bought me presents. I recieved several cards with money inside (Thanks Mom, Dad, Nanny, and Mary!). I'd say it's a pretty good day. I regret having to go to Portland though, my sister was in Eugene and was going to take me to lunch. Mindi, if you are out there: It's not too late. We can do it another time. I'm thinking Marche'. Keep it mind. I could work.

The weather set a record today at 67 degrees. It was really refreshing. The mood of the town changed. Everyone was out talking to each other, commenting on the weather and enjoying the parks. I took a quick snap as a seagull flew close looking for a handout at Alton Baker Park.

Okay, taking pictures of the bedtime routine is not the routine, tonight it was a departure from the routine. I usually, brush Cole and Greta's teeth, give them thier flouride, make sure they go to the bathroom, and clean out their noses if needed. Tonight I took photos.

>Today was our first day of Digital

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

>Yep, we went digital finally. Yesterday we were issued about $22k worth of equipment and today we shot assignments with it. It was really cool to be handed all that new gear. That will probably be the only time in my career when every piece of equipment I have is brand new. It's been really fun. I look forward to making photos that justify the good equipment.

>My Car Troubles Never End

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

>On Monday I took my 4Runner in to the dealership to have the left CV boots replaced. This is a not a big deal. It's a normal wear problem that one should expect to replace on any car eventually. It cost $263.

On Tuesday I decided to spend some time cleaning and doing regular maintainence. I vacuumed, cleaned windows, cleaned my air filter, checked fluids and even decided to rotate my tires.

When I had the left front wheel off, I decided to take a close look at the work Kendall Toyota did the day before. I looked down at the axle hub (that's what I call it) and noticed a nut was missing. I looked closer and realized the remaining five nuts were loose and ready to fall off as well.

This is a serious problem. Had I not removed my wheel, I would have never noticed this. On Sunday I'm driving over the Willamette Pass on my way to Mt. Bachelor. I'm certain I would have met some serious catastrophe. The entire axle and wheel assembly could have come flying off. The very least that would have happened is that the entire assembly would have been destroyed, leaving me stranded in the snow on the mountain.

I was very lucky to have caught this problem. I took the car immediately back to the dealer. They put a new nut on and torqued the rest. They gave me a free oil change for my trouble.

The next project will be fixing the rear brakes on the F250.
